Dannon D. Tarpley

Dannon was born in 1971 in Silver City, NM. He grew up in a small mining and ranching town in Southern New Mexico. He was one of the few punks/metal heads in a town full of rednecks and cowboys. As a boy he always felt out of place in the small town and dreamed of living in Southern California where his heroes (Social Distortion, X, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, DI, Adolescents) lived. By the age of 14, Dannon developed a desire to play music and taught himself how to play drums. He eventually ended up playing drums in a thrash metal band, but never forgot his Southern California punk rock heroes.


In 1989, Dannon moved to Las Cruces, NM to attend college at New Mexico State University. Although his desire for music never diminished, his desire to attend college waned and Dannon eventually quit school to work and to play drums. He started a punk band with friends he had met at his job. While playing drums in the band, Dannon developed an interest in playing guitar and singing. He eventually quit the band to focus on learning how to play guitar and sing. He purchased a cheap Les Paul copy and a Peavey amp. Dannon learned how to play guitar by playing along to the songs of Social Distortion, X, Agent Orange, and other influential punk bands.


In 1993, Dannon’s dreams of living in Southern California came true. He moved to San Diego with a guitarist (Doug) he had met in Albuquerque. In 1994, Dannon and Doug started the band Cup O Joe. Cup O Joe was described as straight ahead punk with a touch of the Afghan Whigs. Cup O Joe played several shows around the San Diego area and recorded several songs that were never released. The band disbanded after a several months due to internal conflict. In 1995, out of the ashes of Cup O Joe, the Boxbutchers were formed (Dannon, Mike, and Jeff). Boxbutchers was a three piece band and initially played straight ahead punk. Overtime as Dannon’s and the other band members musical skills increased they began to implement more complex musical arrangements inspired by Jawbreaker and the Afghan Whigs. Boxbutchers released one 7” record and played shows in San Diego, Orange County, LA, and at Gilman Street in the Bay Area. In 1997, Boxbutchers disbanded shortly after recording Smile with Mileage (never released) due to internal conflict and waning interest.


After the break up of Boxbutchers, Dannon joined the Navy. Dannon served 8 years in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. He was stationed at Newport, RI and at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, CA. Dannon served two tours of duty in Iraq and was discharged honorably from the Navy in 2006. Dannon never lost his desire to play music while in the Navy, and vowed why he was in the Navy that he would once again return to creating music. After his discharge from the Navy, Dannon and his wife moved to Cape Cod, MA. He built a small eight track recording studio in his house and began to write songs hoping to start a new band. The availability of musicians with similar interests in Cape Cod was lacking, so Dannon decided to write music as a solo act. He continues to be inspired by Social Distortion and other Southern California punk bands and also found inspiration from classic metal, 50’s rock and country music. He released his first album in July 2009 and is currently writing songs for a second album.
